NAV Gaming Review 5 out of 5

I have used Norton Antivirus Gaming Edition 2009 for the past 3 months. It replaced Norton Internet Security 2008 which was always getting in the of any game I ran. This Gaming version takes NAV out of the road with one option change. This "gamer" mode can be turned on for 1 to 6 hours but never totally disabled which is good in my opinion, since I tend to forget to re-instate options. The Help dialog in NAV Gamer is great for explaining all the optins available.

One small step for Norton, one giant leap for us users 5 out of 5

I hardly ever get excited about software any more, let alone something so mundane as an antivirus program, but this edition of Norton Antivirus is a gem, let me explain:

Of the bat it installed in 3 vista Machines without a hitch and in something like 5 minutes, I was worried about them not honoring the 3pc per user deal I had with my previous edition of Norton Antivirus,(I couldn't find that information), but yes, it can be installed in up to 3 pcs/user.

The second thing that struck me, is how light it is, on all 3 computers I had modest and not so modest performance gains, which is usually the opposite when installing an antivirus.

But what really seals the deal, is the fact that it comes with a gamer mode which stops update notices and other background tasks when in fullscreen mode or on command, turning off the antivirus is optional ( in finally an options menu designed for people, not cabbage). This is huge, not only for games, but in my case for Audio Applications and the occasional movie, and every background performance leeching program should behave in the same way.

I say it is a small step for Norton, because they are still clinging to the subscription model, which seems like the mafia to me; at the end of my year of service I can either fork over more money or risk getting a virus, and last time this happened they pestered me with messages worse than a telemarketer and ridiculous prices, so they still fail here.

All in all it is really worth it to upgrade if you have a previous version or are looking for a great and simple antivirus.

Solid Product 5 out of 5

I am very pleased with Norton AV Gaming Edition. I previously used BitDefender's Internet Security 2009 and found Norton AV GE to be more stable, easier to configure and less intrusive.

It doesn't impact my gaming--or even general operations--at all. The protection seems very sound; I haven't detected any other malware using secondary scanners since using Nortan AV GE. nor have I seen any virus issues. The process scanner is very nice, it shows all the processes that are running, identifying their origins/manufacturers and gives a safety rating (1-5 stars).

The updates seem to come daily, which is nice since it downloads and installs them quickly. Sometimes I notice the auto-update feature doesn't kick in though--and it gives a red flag on the tray icon. It's a minor complaint, but the only real issue I've seen.

Overall, this is the best AV software I've ever used. I'd recommend it to any gamers that want a low-impact solution to malware protection. I hope Symantec continues with this line of products.

Compatability Problem 2 out of 5

I built an AMD 940 computer with Windows XP 64 installed, after contacting their web site and getting some on-line help, I found out that it is not compatable with Windows XP 64 . Symantec did not state on the box that it is not compatable with Windows XP 64.
I will use it when I build another computer, but I was left disappointed.
