The Original is much better 1 out of 5
Other reviews have hit all the flaws with this game. I just wanted my vote to be counted. Played this game for a couple hours, then uninstalled it and went back to playing the original. All they really had to do was duplicate the original with updated graphics and they would have had an excellent game. Oh well.
Civilization IV Colonization 5 out of 5
I had played the old Colonization back in the day. I was very excited to play a greatly updated version based on the Civilization IV gameplay engine.
Very good price, timely delivery, and a good game.
There is a problem with the graphics, which seems quite pervasive as I have found it in many forums: some units do not display correctly (vessels only show the sails, natives only show the bows, and so on) unless one goes to Civilopedia before starting a game and clicks on the entries for those units. I have contacted the game developer and I am waiting for a proper solution.
Strange Game 2 out of 5
I will preface this by saying that my 11-year-old son has won this game. The key to his success?
1. Buy as many Elder statesmen as you can afford as early in the game as possible.
2. Do not try to defend your cities.
3. Rebel as soon as possible.
All of which seems counter-intuitive to me, as does much of this game. Rather than incorporating real historical experience as a means of informing game rules, this one seems to ignore this precedent. The King has extraordinary advantages, virtually unlimited resources, the ability to tax you, his opponent, into poverty, no domestic unrest of his own with which to contend, and above of all no threat from European rivals. In the real world, it was generally the rebels that had the advantages, shorter supply lines, large populations from which to draw soldiers, and the European powers that were at a disadvantage with populations restive because of taxation and limited resources to devote to colonial outposts. Indeed, it might have been a better game if one were put into the position of a monarch trying to prevent or defeat a revolution of one's colonies. Certainly it would have been more realistic.
Does not work right 1 out of 5
THis program has too many problems. I downloaded the patch and it sometimes works a little but never works enough to play the whole game. Look at this games reviews... most people grade it very low. I would give it a -5 if I could but 1 is the lowest it will let me give. I have played and enjoy all of the other 2K games but it looks like this one was not tested before it went on sale.
Micromanagization 2 out of 5
Don't buy this game if you expect a Civ-clone. It's different from that. Building a strong economy through trade and production, keeping cool with the natives and rival colonies, and keeping the king off your back define this game, not war and pillaging (a great and fun part of civ). In fact, you'll shoot yourself in the foot if you destroy rival native and colonies because they're potential trade partners.
Colonization demands trade and micromanaging your people, unlike Civ. You don't just build structures and watch the money roll in. You have to choose jobs for every single person and make the most of their skills, or lack thereof. Micromanagement means plan, plan, plan every aspect of your revolution so that your towns are pumping out goods for sale because that's how you make money. It takes a lot of work and soon feels more like work than fun because you have to remember who's doing what and how much they're making of what product. You can get wrapped up enough in this that the goal of revolution falls to the background.
Colonization needs work to make it great. It's fun and extremely interesting, but some glitches make it un-fun, such as invisible units (which I still can't figure out how to fix). I hope Firaxis can give this classic the respect it deserves in the future.
