GRID is all about 40 of the most incredible race cars ever created with the finest AI. GRID is about revolutionary damage to vehicles and environments that affect your race and blow your mind. GRID is about the most complete replay packages, letting you relive the moments of your glory or destruction in jaw-dropping hi-res slow-motion.
It's a crime that this game isn't more famous 5 out of 5
After playing this game for several hours, I slipped Forza Motorsport III into my XBox 360 to compare. Forza seemed shockingly tame by comparison. Forza's visuals seem artificially pretty, and they seem to be locked to a rock-steady tripod. By contrast, GRID's visuals are gritty and realistic, and the cameras seems to be hand-held. Forza's cars look like they are made of shiny plastic. GRID's cars look like real cars.
Forza *is* a great game, of the type of game it tries to be: a classy racer.
But GRID is all about *racing excitement*. In fact, I haven't played it for days, and I'm getting excited just thinking about playing it. No other game has captured for me so well the sense of urgency in racing a car.
GRID, however, isn't your typical arcade racer. The driving model feels terribly realistic, even with all possible driving aids turned on. This is one game you must *learn* how to drive. Winning any race in GRID is an *achievement*. The very real possibility of serious car damage adds loads of excitement, while the "flashback" feature (the Omega-13 of racing games) gives you the ability to recover from serious errors (five or so errors per race). So you end up driving a bit more aggressively than you might otherwise.
The result is a level of excitement in racing that I've never found elsewhere. The cars feel real, and the AI feels real, and the graphics look real. Where the game cheats reality is where reality is *boring*.
There is no good reason this game is so cheap. It's a steal at under $20.
Disappointing 1 out of 5
After playing Dirt, I could hardly wait to get into this game.
I prefer realism and realistic cars and driving. What this is is
another excellent example of what's wrong with the racing genre.
THE GOOD:
Graphics, sounds, detail, cars (interior and exterior)
Menu System
THE BAD:
Virtually unplayable with driving aids turned off
Pedal sensitivity and feel , even with saturation turned down
Steering lag
Bump-n-Grind (The other cars smash each other (and you) around
the track like a demolition derby!)
Narrator in your ear all the time (very annoying)
Car slides around like it was on ice, can burnout from a standstill
in 4th gear!
The AI cars don't slide like you do, they grip all the way through
the turn!
After Dirt, I thought the same company would nail the driving in this game.
I have other racers (Indianapolis 500, Race Pro, Forza2) that are far more
realistic than this game is. In those games it's your driving that makes
the difference, not how many "cheats" you have turned on. I guess if you like
playing with that stuff, you'll like this game just fine. If you're looking for
more realism, though, more sim,I suggest you look elsewhere. I agree with another
poster on F1 in Sept. I hope they don't screw that one up.
Graphics are good but game is limited 3 out of 5
first thing i noticed was the graphics were good in HD but then i noticed that there is no customization for the cars whatsoever. that's one of the best parts of racing games is to buy the upgraded parts so your car goes faster or handles better. this game doesnt have that.
Best sim/arcade racer I've played! 5 out of 5
How can I begin explaining the experience I've had with this game? Well for starters, I've played and enjoyed 1980's Pole Position, 1990's Rage Racer and Gran turismo, 2000's GT3 & 4, Burnout Revenge and finally Forza Motorsport 2. Grid got the best of them all put into one smooth gorgeous looking game(almost movie like realism with the crash animation, cars and environments). The sound design is also excellent. The sense of speed in this game just blows my mind away. Imagine going in the narrow streets of Milan, Italy at 180 mph! What a rush!!
Some people say this game is not a true simulation because of the inaccurate physics , but then my answer is that your competing AI drivers in Grid are trying to win unlike GT's ones. They spin out, fly up in the air sometimes--it's funny to see a driver that just passed you do that--and crash. In the Gran Turismo and Forza franchises, at least in the beginning of the career mode, the other drivers behave like wagons in a train and also the game doesn't have crash physics. Additionally, nobody communicates/talks to you any time in the game. Granted in Grid your pit manager becomes a bit repetitious but at least someone is talking to you unlike games that people consider simulation of the racing world. Another thing gamers complain about is how difficult Grid is and I must partially agree. Personally, I had to set the difficulty to the lowest setting to be able to win most of the races (I'm not that good at games). How does that compare to GT's hardness? Well I remember trying the International A licence in GT4, and it was plain ridiculous. You had to race against time for 10:00 minutes in a narrow winding road without ever leaving the pavement. What the crap! One last point, purist argue that in Grid one cannot customize the limited amount of cars. But when I played Gran Turismo 4 or Forza 2 what I really wanted was to get hold of the best cars. Also, customization is a double edge sword: Sometimes it helps you win the race and sometimes it doesn't. Grid dispenses with the ordinary vehicles and supplies the drivers with the hottest wheels on the road.
Grid is a very hot looking piece of software simulation or arcade if you will, and a lot of fun!
Best racing game I've played to date 5 out of 5
If you are looking for a more realistic racing game with more than the standard races, this is for you!
The physics in this game are amazing, and I just love how you can do many different styles of racing as well. I was particularly suprised to see that it had a demolition race, I also didn't expect it to have drifting. I usually get pretty bored with games like forza and other racing games that strive to be realistic, but this game takes the win hands down. Once I started playing this game I couldn't stop playing it till I finished it, also this game gives you plenty of races before you can completely beat it, plus it doesn't give you the same style of race over and over so you don't get bored trying to do the same damn thing. Plenty of different tracks all around the world for different scenery, no unrealistic bs, but one thing they left out that I think they should add in the next one, if there is a next one is, customization of cars. I kinda have mixed feelings about that though cause I like how simple it is to get to racing but at the same time I wish I could mod stuff out.
In the end, if you are looking for a sweet racing game that will give you serious challenge, get this! I promise you wont be disappointed.
