Players will colonize worlds, develop extensive trade networks, conduct research and diplomacy, and build fleets as they fight to control an immense galaxy using one of three distinct races.
Sins of A Solar Empire - Mini Dumps 3 out of 5
This is a good space game to play if it's just you and the computer. If you want to LAN with other people it has alot of "Mini Dump" issues. There are no fixes for the "Mini Dumps", and the company doesn't really want to fix it! A "Mini Dump" is a game crash! The game stops and shuts down...
Stardock will make you buy a new copy to get any upgrades 1 out of 5
Unless you want to play this games without any of the official upgrades, don't bother buying a used copy. Stardock will make you buy a new copy to get any upgrades -- and they'll be pretty arrogant about it too, in my experience :(
Disappointed 2 out of 5
There is a total lack of any developing plot line despite the fact that the intro seems to indicate that there will be, also once you discover a certain strategy you can easily defeat the game even on the hardest level, and also despite the fact that you can take direct command of the capital ships and control when they use their special abilities, there seems to be no benefit to doing this.
The game looks great and at first seems really good but there is unfortunately no real depth...the same strategy works for any race against any race...
Disappointed! But the right direction. 3 out of 5
I actualy thought this game was going to be good. I read many reviews, both on this site and on IGN, and all were generally, if not completely favorable. But unfoutunately this game is one of the worst I have played this year. It's a shame because I love RTS games like Civilization, Total war, and even Command and Conquor, but this game is nothing like them. For one, I was lead to believe that the graphics where somewhat good. This is completly false. Playing this game was a five year flash-back to the Homeworld days. Not that this realy bothered me, considering I also bought Mount and Blade which despite its graphics is one of the best games I have ever played. But after the graphics this game gets worse. The capitol ships are only slightly bigger than your other ships(Nothing like the huge mammoths from Homeword), and your small one ship fighters do not enter cool dogfights nor can you mass produce them which would have been nice considering they die very quickly. Also explosions are terrible. I have not seen such bad explosions since the first Age of Empires. There is just one little animation and your ships are just gone, no wreckage, no smoke, nothing!
Most importantly though there is no story. Now I know most reviews have pinpointed this and it was not a problem for me, but as bad as the combat and graphics where it really, really needed this! The cap limit on ships was also very frustrating for it was all dependent on how many planets you settled the quickest, and for me I usualy like to take things slow. It just seemed as if the game was forcing me to overextend myself as fast as I could, and this is a very bad feeling to have in a real time simulation.
But even taking all these things into consideration there is still the great RTS play right? WRONG! This game is not Civilization. The planets you built up like cities are quick little upgrades that don't realy do much for you except allow you to built more structures and such, which you built from a limited amount of resource types. Although this was a sound idea(And definitly not a knew one!), they just did not extrapulate enough on the concept. It was far to basic. And I suppose the same could be said about the entire game RTS mechanics. Infact I spent most of my breaf time playing in the far zoom out map. When you see the game like this, one can see how raw this game realy is. Over all there was not much to do. In other words, the games BORING!
If you like RTS real-time try Suppreme Commander which has semi-better graphics, and bigger and better battles. I know this review is very harsh but I'm a violinist and like perfection, but on a light note, I would like to say that I think Stardock is going in the right direction and that is why I give a three star rating. I would like them to pursue this game with a second instalment and make it more like the Total War and Civilization hybrid that it was Obviously meant to be.
A testament of quality to the RTS genre. 5 out of 5
This is a deep, engrossing real-time strategy war game with empire expansion akin to classics of the 4X strategy genre, such as Civilization or Master of Orion. It is truly a perfect blend of the best elements from real-time and turn-based strategy. The game maintains the fierce, cutthroat combat seen in the best of today's RTS titles, while simultaneously housing incredibly in-depth military and civilian expansion, infrastructure and research. The battlefields are vast and expansive with galaxies ranging from as few as twelve planets to as many as a thousand. With three races to choose from, over fifteen different ships per race and dozens upon dozens of technology upgrades unique to each race, it will be a long time before you run out of new things to discover. Take the game online and duke it out against up to nine other human players in a galactic expansion space race for the ages!
