The last straw killed the fun 1 out of 5
This isn't really my style of RPG, but I got into it after playing for a while and having fun kicking enemies around, though it's quite frustrating with the on-the-rails action sequences where you're dead if you don't do the correct things in the correct sequence quickly enough. It was just enough fun that I was willing to put up with the view swinging around wildly whenever I moved the mouse, and I was even willing to put up with dying dozens of times while trying to figure out how to get through particular sequences, but the last straw was when I got to the spot where I'm chasing some creature and I end up in kind of a pit where the only way out seems to be climbing a tree, and for the life of me I could not do it no matter how hard I tried. Jumping up on branches of the tree while trying to move the mouse as little as possible because it tends to fling you around, all while listening to intense music and a voice in your head pushing you to move as fast as possible, is a great formula for severe frustration. I think I spent over an hour trying to get out of that pit. I finally gave up and uninstalled the game. If you're good at console action/twitch games, you might like this one; otherwise, spend your money on something else.
Brilliant fantasy action RPG despite its flaws 5 out of 5
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic continues the long standing RPG franchise. In this single player action RPG you take on the role of Sareth, a young man who is under the tutelage of a Wizard named Phenrig. Sareth has spent years of studying magic and physical combat. Finally ready for his first expedition, Sareth is tasked to retrieve an artifact known as the Shantiri Crystal. After a quick tutorial he finds the Crystal and is tasked to bring the crystal to an associate of Phenrig's, the Wizard Menelag, in the city of Stonehelm. Menelag and Phenrig have a mutual interest in finding an artifact called the Skull of Shadows. Here begins Sareth's first real adventure and my thoughts on Dark Messiah of Might and Magic;
Pros
+ Fast paced action oriented combat.
+ Adult themed violence, blood and gore.
+ Excellent interactive item physics allowing multiple ways to combat opponents. Kicking enemies into spikes, fire, off of cliffs or simply crushing them under collapsing objects never gets old.
+ Adrenaline rush option makes for some great finesse filled and stylish finishing moves.
+ Great graphics, often with stunning and jaw dropping back drops, especially on the harbor/docks level.
+ Rope Bow. Loved it! Simply one of the best items I've ever had in fantasy game. It made exploration of every level enjoyable and challenging.
+ Good replay value with the class trees allowing you to tailor your character to your play style (warrior, archer, thief, mage or a combination of all).
+ Amazing soundtrack score composed by Cris Velasco and Sascha Dikiciyan (God of War, Prototype, Hellgate London, Clive Barker's Jericho etc.). They quickly become some of my favorite game score composers right along side of Jeremy Soule. The soundtrack for this game has stayed on my iPod ever since I purchased the Limited Edition of the game on release day.
+ Well laid out dungeons. The Necropolis near the end of the game was particularly stunning. It felt cavernous and foreboding, similar to Moria in Lord of the Rings.
+ While not extremely original, the story line was respectable compared to many other fantasy titles.
+ Xana's (a demon companion) sarcasm can be rather amusing at times. Also a con, see below.
+ Ability to transform into a demon or use holy weapons was fun.
+ Save anywhere, anytime.
Cons
- Limited Edition of the game is unfortunately "Limited" as for what it includes. Only worth it if you want a physical copy of the Original Soundtrack.
- Long load times.
- Game can be a bit buggy in many places even after patching.
- Some annoying voice work, Leanna and Xana especially. Both of them can sound incredibly stupid, pushy and just plain irritating.
- Inventory space was rather miniscule. Patch also limits the amount of potions you can carry. Pre-patch there's no limit. This is a very important change if you choose to go as a pure warrior with no healing magic.
- Weapon forges seemed like a last minute addition to the game.
- Ropes from the rope bow became troublesome to manuever if the arrows are too close together. The game had trouble determining which rope to jump to at really close quarters.
- Limited amount of enemies and items. While all of the creatures you fought looked great it would have been nice to see more. Also, the variety of weapons/items was lacking and repeatedly reused. Very frustrating when you'd spend 15-20 minutes exploring the reaches of a difficult area only to find the exact item you were already wearing or using.
- Too short.
I'll be the first to admit that this is one of my all time favorite games. I've played through it several times (single player campaign only) over the last couple years as various classes. This is something I almost NEVER do with games. Sure it had its flaws (what game doesn't?) but the overall fun of the game easily overshadows the issues. Hopefully they'll release a sequel which I would of course buy immediately. If you're a fan of fantasy action RPGs I can't recommend this title enough as it was the perfect game for my tastes.
Not Compatible with Windows 7 1 out of 5
This game is not Compatible with Windows 7. I put the compatibility to windows XP pack 2, I made sure my drivers where up to date and both patches were installed. I am not able to go forward using th W key or any key. I emailed support for this software they told me that this is not compatible with windows 7. I suggest you do not buy this product if you have windows 7 or thinking about up grading.

Ye olde first person RPG. 3 out of 5
This is the first first person fantasy rpg I've played, and I've been craving such a game, so it's been hitting the spot. Rather fun overall, although less than perfect execution in some areas. It's worth noting that on the technical side, they really did leave some bugs in there. I couldn't even get the game turned on until I patched it up to current, and even then the game crashes every time you exit it. There are occasional clipping errors, but quickload solves that, uh, quickly.
If you have a hankering to swing a sword, headshot with a bow, or throw fireballs, the game is cool. If you are looking for artisan quality, keep looking.
