Cheap 2 out of 5
For the price I suppose its decent enough but the latch/sides don't meet up properly when folding it together. Also, the little elastic straps on the inside to hold the pieces broke the first time I tried to use them. Additionally, the top of the board is beveled and looks like its going to come off any second.
Excellent first set. 5 out of 5
This is a great chess set. The board is inlaid, set has a 3" King, and hand-carved Staunton pieces. I also purchased the Drueke Wood Checkers; they match this set perfectly. We're very pleased with both purchases. Highly recommend this set and the checkers.
Solid and unsurprising 4 out of 5
It's solid and decently constructed. It's a chess set. What else is there to say? The picture pretty well covers it.
Disappointing 1 out of 5
It looks like I'm in the minority on this product. Perhaps my expectations were too high. My issue is with the quality and attention to detail in this board. I've played chess for over 25 years and used everything from wood and metal boards to Chessmaster. The design was aesthetically very poor; little to no effort was put into making the Knight look like a horse and the Kings were marginally differentiated from the queen. The execution of the design was worse; cut lines in the bishops weren't straight or clean while pieces of felt were still stuck to random parts of the pieces. The boad itself is simple particle board. I undrstand these are "hand carved" pieces but this thing made me feel like it was something my 4-year old niece would have done. If you read my other reviews you will see that, for the most part, I am not a curmudgeon or extremely picky. But this thing just got mailed back to Amazon.
A perfect chess set for a beginner 5 out of 5
This is a very well thought-through chess set for a beginner, especially a kid. The board is comfortably big while not too large, so it is possible for a kid to "see" it without moving the eyes from side to side, and it is very important for developing strategic assessment skills in the game. The figures are clearly distinct and have classic shapes, so the differentiation is never an issue. I would certainly recommend this set for a family where a child is learning to play chess. Adult players may want a slightly larger set, but this one is perfectly built for 7-12 year olds.
