Very addicting game 5 out of 5
I really like the strategy of the game
I have most of the other civ games and I think it is one of the best ones. This game is very addicting, I could play for days at a time. And above all it was in the condition that was given and it came faster than expected.
Awesome game; terrible copy 2 out of 5
I bought this copy of the game as a back-up copy for my original Civ III disks (bought many years ago), which are starting to show wear.
I have to split this review into three parts: (1) my satisfaction with the game itself, (2) my satisfaction with this purchase, and (3) my satisfaction with the version of the game that I received.
(1) The game itself is awesome: easily worth five stars. I have played every version of Civilization from I to IV, and Civ III is my favorite. Gameplay, graphics, and AI are all improved dramatically from Civ I and Civ II. Civ III was also the first version designed with the expectation that users would modify the game, leading to thousands of different modifications available for free online--everything from minor mods such as new units and graphics tweaks to major mods that essentially create an entirely new game. Civ IV's graphics are the only thing about Civ IV that I like better than Civ III, but they come at a price in performance (when I "downgraded" from Civ IV back to Civ III, I was amazed how much faster Civ III runs on my PC). The new features and options in Civ IV are interesting, but they make the game much more complicated and therefore--for me--less fun.
(2) I did not receive the game pictured above. Instead, I received a version of the game made by "Sold-out Software." I consider this to be a bit of a bait-and-switch, and so I am very displeased with this aspect of my purchase. I did not immediately notice the switch, and ended up opening the seal before I noticed. I'm not sure whether Amazon will take the software back now, but I will probably try to return it, especially given the problems described below.
(3) I have serious problems loading this version of the game due to the copy protection scheme and/or the fact that these are not "real" Civilization III disks. (They do not look anything like my original disks; they are copies made by Sold-out Software.) Almost every time I try to load the game, I get an error message. Sometimes, I get an immediate error message stating that I've inserted the wrong disk. Other times, the game tries to load for about thirty seconds and then gives me a "time out" error message. It's not unusual for me to have to retry three to five times until the game finally loads.
So, the game itself gets five stars, but THIS VERSION of the game--and a sales tactic I perceive as a bait-and-switch--gets one star. So I'll give the game five stars for fun, but only two stars for the overall purchase.
Installation issues for "best" strategy game 4 out of 5
I do not own CIV IV, but from the circa 20 strategy games I played this is clearly the deeper and most interesting.
This is particularly true for those with an interest in history and realpolitik.
A game takes 20 to 60 hours and requires micromanagement if you want to play on the harder levels.
The box which came to me does not look like in the picture, there was no printed manual, and I had to
work to make the game work. Hint: put the game in a C:\civ directory (and not the default one).
The best strategy game ever! 5 out of 5
I really enjoy this game and it is one of my all time favorite video games ever it may be old but i still love this game i think this game is way better then civ 4 the only thing about this game is its not for every one u need lots of game experience and lots of patience onte time i spent over thity hours on one game unfortunately my computer broke and it was lost forever and i was never able to finish it. i give this game a five star rating!
Review for Civilization 3 Complete 5 out of 5
For those of us that get motion sick playing player point of view games, I still love these older turn based games. I have Civilization 4, but find myself playing Civ 3 more. I also appreciate the fact that random games generate a different game each time so you never get bored.
